Francis had an aging Windows 2003 server purchased over 8 years ago. It was long out of warranty and he was worried it could become unreliable. He purchased a new Dell T100 server to replace it. Francis was quite IT literate but after reading through all Microsoft's documentation on migrating servers he felt a little out of his depth! Francis gave us a call after finding our website through Google and explained what he wanted to achieve:

  • Minimise downtime during the migration
  • Migrate Active Directory to the new server
  • Ensure there would be no data loss

I arranged with Francis to meet him at his offices later that week and perform the migration.

When I got there I identified that I also needed to migrate the following services:

  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • File server

Less than four hours after arriving I had migrated Active Directory, DNS & DHCP to the new server with little downtime and demoted the old one.
