QSUK provides management systems in the South of England, for health and safety; quality assurance; environmental management and human resources. QSUK is owned and run by Flemming and Louise Westphalen.

Flemming and Louise are looking to expand and want to invest in an IT infrastructure for the future. They needed computers for work in the office and laptops for out of the office. They wanted a central e-mail store with antivirus and spyware protection and it was important to them that they both used the same e-mail account. They needed to be sure that the client data was safe and protected. Video editing was becoming an important aspect of their business and they needed a PC capable of providing this.

Our Solution

Telanova's proposal was to provide a Windows 2003 Small Business Server based network. This provided:

  • Central store of their data
    • A RAID array, so data was still available in the event of a single hard drive failure.
    • Onsite and offsite backup to protect their data whilst offering fast data restoration times.
    • The use of offline files to ensure that they both had access to important client data whilst out of the office.
  • Exchange server
    • Providing a centrally managed e-mail system
  • AVG Antivirus SBS
    • Centrally managed antivirus and spyware protection for the server and clients, protecting e-mails via an exchange plugin.
  • Laptop clients with docking stations
  • A custom PC with video editing capability
  • Remote monitoring so that we can act on potential problems before they occur
  • Technical support - someone to turn to should any technical issues arise for a fixed monthly fee
  • We provided a multifunction printer/scanner/fax to save space in their home office
  • We used docking stations together with small laptops to give the comfort of working with a full sized keyboard and monitor and the convenience of a small laptop for mobile use.
  • We also provided a branded PC which we upgraded with video editing capability and a KVM switch so that it could share the keyboard and monitor with one of the laptops. Thereby saving space and unnecessary expense.
  • Broadband - due to contractual obligations, at least for the first 6 months, internet connectivity would be provided by a residential broadband connection with dynamic IP addressing and various other restrictions.
    • Using dynamic DNS we were able to maintain remote connectivity for maintenance and monitoring
    • We provided VPN access and remote desktop, so they could check their e-mails whilst out of the office.
    • We used a pop collector e-mail service so we could deliver e-mail to one mailbox which they both connected to.
    • Using centrally managed updates, through WSUS, and centrally managed antivirus, through AVG, we preserved their bandwidth ensuring only one set of files was downloaded for all of their PCs.

QSUK's Verdict
Flemming says "We are delighted and impressed with the whole telanova experience. Our system is just what we wanted, we can depend on it, we are far more productive and can work much more closely as a team. I recommend telanova highly"
