When a new business is formed, IT decisions made in the first few weeks can have a long-lasting impact. Setting things up properly from day one can help avoid security gaps, inconsistent systems, duplicated work and costly changes later.
That was the priority for a new Telanova client, a start-up based in North London that needed a reliable Microsoft 365 environment to support its launch and future growth.
Starting with a domain name and two laptops, Telanova created a secure, centrally managed Microsoft 365 environment designed to support the business from day one while providing a foundation that could scale as the company grows.

The Challenge
The client needed to get its core Microsoft 365 environment in place quickly, but without cutting corners.
For many start-ups, the temptation is to simply get email working and worry about structure, security and support later. The problem is that early shortcuts can become long-term problems.
Poorly configured environments can lead to inconsistent user setup, weak access controls, unmanaged devices, unclear support processes and unnecessary disruption as a business starts to scale.
The client needed a practical, secure and supportable Microsoft 365 foundation that would allow the business to operate professionally from the beginning while putting in place many of the technical controls required to support future Cyber Essentials certification.
Building the Microsoft 365 Environment
Telanova's role was to take the business from having a domain name and two laptops to a working Microsoft 365 environment that its team could start using straight away.
The first step was selecting the appropriate Microsoft 365 licensing. Rather than simply enabling business email, Telanova recommended Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
This provided the business with access to Microsoft Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint alongside identity protection, device management and additional security capabilities that could support the organisation as it grows. Telanova also provides ongoing Microsoft 365 user administration and Exchange Online support as part of its managed IT services.
Telanova then:
- Purchased and assigned Microsoft 365 Business Premium licences.
- Registered the new Microsoft 365 tenant.
- Connected the company's domain.
- Configured DNS records, including mail routing and sender authentication.
- Created the initial user accounts.
- Completed initial sign-in and configuration checks.
- Configured Outlook, OneDrive and Microsoft Teams.
- Created a Microsoft Team for collaboration and shared file storage.
- Assisted with email signatures and initial user guidance.
This gave the business a clean, consistent Microsoft 365 environment from the beginning rather than one that would need to be reorganised later.
Preparing and Managing the Business Devices
The company's two laptops were originally running Windows Home.
Because Windows Home does not provide the same business management capabilities required for the planned environment, Telanova arranged for the devices to be upgraded to Windows Pro.
The laptops could then be joined to Microsoft Entra ID and enrolled into Microsoft Intune, allowing them to be centrally configured and managed.
This meant the devices were no longer simply standalone consumer laptops. They became part of the company's managed business IT environment.
Building Security in from the Beginning
Rather than adding security controls later, they were incorporated into the initial setup.
Telanova created configuration and compliance policies designed to ensure devices accessing company information met the required security baseline. This approach to device compliance and Microsoft Intune management allows security requirements to be applied consistently across managed business devices.
These included controls to help ensure:
- Drives are encrypted.
- Antivirus protection is installed and up to date.
- Windows Firewall is enabled and securely configured.
- Devices use secure passwords and PINs.
- Devices lock after periods of inactivity.
- Windows devices remain up to date.
These controls also helped establish the technical foundations the business would need if it chooses to pursue Cyber Essentials certification in the future.
Preparing for Future Growth with Windows Autopilot
The project wasn't only designed around the company's first two laptops.
By using Windows Autopilot as the business grows, new laptops can be shipped directly from the supplier to new employees.
When an authorised employee signs in for the first time, the device can be automatically configured with the organisation's security policies, remote management tools and required line-of-business applications.
This creates a much more scalable onboarding process and reduces the amount of manual IT configuration required every time the company recruits someone new.
If an employee needs assistance, Telanova's helpdesk can remotely connect and provide support.
The Outcome
The result was more than simply a Microsoft 365 tenant.
The new business had a practical working environment it could begin using immediately.
Employees could sign in using their business accounts, access Outlook, store files through OneDrive and collaborate using Microsoft Teams.
The company's laptops were also centrally managed and protected rather than operating as unmanaged consumer devices.
Most importantly, the business now has an IT foundation designed to grow with it.
New users, laptops, security controls and collaboration tools can be introduced into an existing managed environment rather than having to redesign the company's IT every time it reaches another stage of growth.
Why This Matters for Growing Businesses
New businesses often move quickly, which can make IT reactive.
But establishing the right IT foundations for a small business early can save considerable time, cost and disruption later.
A properly planned Microsoft 365 environment gives a growing business a manageable platform for communication, collaboration, device management and security.
It also makes future changes easier, whether that means adding employees, introducing additional security controls, deploying new devices or expanding the tools the business uses.
The Key Takeaway
If you're launching a new business, Microsoft 365 shouldn't be treated simply as a way to get email working.
Starting with a properly structured tenant, managed business devices and appropriate security controls provides a stronger foundation for the business and makes it easier for the technology environment to grow alongside the organisation.
